USM Haller Dimensions & Grid Dimensions: All Sizes at a Glance
The entire USM Haller system is based on a fixed grid. Once you know the grid dimensions, you can plan, extend or build any piece of furniture yourself with compatible parts. Here you will find all the important dimensions – from a single compartment down to the ball.
The basic principle: grid size from ball centre to ball centre
All dimensions in the system are grid dimensions (also called system dimensions), measured from ball centre to ball centre. The most common compartment is 75 cm wide, 35 cm high and 35 cm deep. But it is not the only one: width, height and depth can be chosen independently of each other.
- Width: most often 75, 50 and 35 cm. The system also includes other widths, for example 25 or 39.5 cm.
- Depth: usually 35 cm. For deeper furniture – such as media units or sideboards next to a desk – 50 cm is common, less often 25 or 75 cm.
- Height per level: usually 35 cm. Other heights include 17.5, 25, 39.5, 50 and 75 cm.
The outer dimension is about 3.6 cm larger than the grid size, because the balls protrude beyond the grid. A 75 cm wide compartment therefore measures about 79 cm outside, a 35 cm deep one about 39 cm. With levelling feet, a unit with one 35 cm level is about 39 cm high.
Sizes available in our shop
- Outer panels: 35 × 35, 50 × 35, 75 × 35 and 75 × 50 cm.
- Drop-down doors: 35 × 35, 50 × 35 and 75 × 35 cm.
- Pull-out shelves (drawers): 50 and 75 cm wide, for 35 cm depth.
- Tubes: 14 lengths from 100 to 750 mm (100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 225, 250, 275, 300, 350, 395, 500, 595 and 750 mm).
This lets you build 35 cm deep compartments in all three widths – and also 75 cm wide compartments with a depth of 50 cm: the bottom and top are then 75 × 50 cm outer panels, the sides 50 × 35 cm, the back panel and the drop-down door 75 × 35 cm.

In width, 75 cm compartments measure about 79 cm outside (1 compartment), 154 cm (2), 229 cm (3) and 304 cm (4). The outer depth is about 39 cm, or about 54 cm with a 50 cm grid depth.
USM Kitos tables
Kitos is USM's table system. It has its own base frame and much deeper tops than the shelving system; the USM catalogue includes, for example, a 180 × 90 cm table. The Kitos M version can be adjusted in height without electricity, from sitting to standing. Sideboards can easily be matched in width to the table dimensions. We do not sell parts for Kitos tables.
Individual parts for DIY builders
Balls: about 25 mm in size, chrome-plated, with six M8 × 1.25 threaded holes – one in each direction. The tube connectors are screwed into these holes, and at the bottom the levelling feet or castors.
Tubes: chrome-plated steel. The stated length is the system dimension (e.g. 350 or 750 mm); the tube itself is about 18 mm shorter, so a 750 tube is about 732 mm long. The ends are chamfered and have no thread – the connector joins the tube to the ball. For shelves with a locking screw there are tubes with a hole or with a slot and hole.
Connectors: sit in the tube ends and are screwed into the ball, about 42 × 16 mm. Every tube needs two. There is a 1st and a 2nd generation; to loosen stuck connectors you need the matching connector puller.
Panels: powder-coated steel. Their size matches the grid size of the compartment, e.g. 75 × 35 cm for the bottom, top or back of a standard compartment and 35 × 35 cm for the sides.
Levelling feet: are screwed into the bottom balls and compensate for uneven floors. Castors are an alternative.
Planning tips
Distance to the wall: allow 2 to 3 cm to the wall, as the balls protrude slightly.
Tip-over safety: from about 109 cm height (3 levels) we recommend fixing the unit to the wall; from about 178 cm it is strongly advised.
Counting parts: balls = (compartments side by side + 1) × (levels + 1) × (depth rows + 1); a single-row lowboard with 2 compartments therefore needs 3 × 2 × 2 = 12 balls. Every tube needs two connectors.
Heavy loads: distribute heavy weight evenly and preferably on the lower levels. For heavily loaded shelves there are tubes with a hole and the shelf locking screw.
